Ask your kiddos what they ate at school

FARM STORIES & UPDATES

Thank you to our community for sponsoring our apple cider and doughnut party! It’s one thing for parties and lunches to come from us, and another for it to come from you all so our staff can really see how much they’re appreciated. On the beautiful Friday afternoon, we enjoyed Beardsley cider and doughnuts - and our tip jar was bursting so full that our crew shared the rest.

This week is CT Grown for CT Kids week in schools across the state - celebrating the connection between locally grown produce and healthy school meals! Students in Trumbull and Shelton can find our produce in all of the school cafeterias - from peppers to tomatoes, summer squash, beans, watermelon, and more! These partnerships continue all through the fall, well beyond this special week. Be sure to ask your kiddos what they ate!

On Friday, the students at Booth Hill School in Shelton enjoyed a fresh cucumber and tomato salad with Italian dressing.

This past week was a huge one for harvesting. We needed to wait for some drier weather so we could pick up all of our winter squash. It goes into huge bins to be stored through December, so it can't go in wet. Well, Friday was a beautiful day... until it wasn't! We were just about finished picking up the butternut squash when the skies opened up. The crew quickly grabbed a tarp and covered the bin, then called it a day. We'll try to finish the project next week.

We were able to pick up the massive butternut squashes. We grow this variety specifically for our jarred butternut squash sauce. They run anywhere from 12-15 lbs., like so:

This coming week we're also going to attempt to pick up the rest of the sweet potatoes. Again, we had to wait for the ground to dry out on Saturday, and by the time we got to it, we weren't able to complete the project. Hopefully soon enough! Here's a progress photo of the bins of squash.

And finally, check out this beautiful pepper I found this week. I had never seen anything like it! I looked it up and it's a special variety that was discovered in the Netherlands. The seed must have gotten mixed in with the ones we planted.

VEGETABLE SUBSCRIPTION PICKUP POLICIES

  • All pickups must take place within store operating hours. For many reasons, we can't leave shares outside the store. Pickup days are Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays.

  • If you need to skip your share for the week, or change your pickup day, you must provide us with 48 hours' notice for any of the options below. This is because we pack shares the day before pickup. Once your share has been harvested and packed, we can not change or cancel your pickup.

  • For Tuesday pickups being changed, we need to know by Sunday.

    • Wednesday pickups, we need to know by Monday.

    • Saturday pickups, we need to know by Thursday.

  • You have the option to choose another pickup day in a given week: we offer share pickup on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Saturday only. We can not have shares ready on any other days.

  • You can skip a pickup and receive a double the following week.

  • If you miss your pickup, we will hold your share for 24 hours after your pickup day, and then it will be donated to a local food pantry. With more members than ever before, we don't have the cooler space to hold onto shares longer than this. This is a great option if you miss your pickup - just come the next day.

  • You can always send a guest to pick up in your place by simply notifying us of their name.

  • Please send us an email to laurelglenfarm@gmail.com 48 hours before an anticipated change. You must submit your request in writing in order to leave a paper trail. This allows you to show proof to our store staff at pickup in the event that we need clarification.

  • If a share is picked up outside of your scheduled time (aside from an approved change) or the 24 hour holding period without proof of a request, you will be billed for an additional share.
