It's time to launch our Year of the Cabbage Cook-Off!

Over the winter, Vogue magazine decided that 2026 was the Year of the Cabbage. They and other publications celebrated the underrated nature of cabbage - its affordability, culinary versatility, and nutritional value (fiber, vitamins C and K, and antioxidants).

Mamas, did you know that research studies have even found that cabbage leaves are helpful for reducing breast engorgement and pain?! Since I'm personally down a rabbit hole, I'll even share this fun fact:

"Researchers from Texas A&M Health have found that breastfeeding mothers who eat vegetables such as broccoli and cabbage could pass along health benefits to their nursing infants." Read the whole article here.

So, let's join the ranks of influencers who are touting all that cabbage has to offer.

From now through Sunday, October 4th, share with us a unique or creative dish involving cabbage - something beyond stuffed cabbage and coleslaw - to showcase that culinary versatility. All you have to do is snap a photo of your meal and submit the name of the dish. Send it to us by email, post it in our subscription members' Facebook group, or tag us on social media @laurelglenfarmllc. We'll reshare all submissions and then choose one winner on Monday, October 5th. We've even had a prize custom made for the person who wows our team and community the most!

This week's free choice will be "grab a green" and will include both green and napa cabbage - either type can be used as an ingredient in the cook-off. And if you don't want to participate, you're welcome to grab something else from the table, most likely including lettuce and escarole.

This past weekend we welcomed nearly 120 families to the farm for our annual Bonus Box Harvest event. Last year, members who enrolled in our Subscription Program during the 2-day sale qualified for an invitation to the event. They came to the farm, learned a little about our processes, and harvested their own additional free share of vegetables.

It's always one of our favorite times, and we so grateful for all of our members' upfront commitment to the farm. You can absolutely bet that if you enroll again during our 2-day sale, one of the perks will include a chance to come to the event in 2027. Save the date for Sunday, October 11th at 7 a.m. for when 2027 Vegetable Subscription enrollment opens! Information will be sent out in late September to help you prepare.

Our apple trees haven't yet reached maturity, but they are starting to bear fruit. We've harvested what they've given us and will be selling apples in our store until they're gone. At that point, we'll source apples from our friends at Hindinger Farm in Hamden.

And finally, we’ve hosted quite a few lunches this season, but every year we love to offer the community a chance to sponsor an ice cream party for our staff.

This summer, like all years, was challenging - most notably the heat wave we faced at the beginning of July. Our crew works incredibly hard, and they’d love to hear how much they’re appreciated. As we usher in fall, we’re putting out a tip jar on the checkout counter through Saturday, September 26th. Spare change will go toward an apple cider and doughnut party if you feel so inclined to contribute. Thank you so much to everyone who has contributed, and to member Sara for reminding me to launch this this year!

VEGETABLE SUBSCRIPTION PICKUP POLICIES

  • All pickups must take place within store operating hours. For many reasons, we can't leave shares outside the store. Pickup days are Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays.

  • If you need to skip your share for the week, or change your pickup day, you must provide us with 48 hours' notice for any of the options below. This is because we pack shares the day before pickup. Once your share has been harvested and packed, we can not change or cancel your pickup.

  • For Tuesday pickups being changed, we need to know by Sunday.

    • Wednesday pickups, we need to know by Monday.

    • Saturday pickups, we need to know by Thursday.

  • You have the option to choose another pickup day in a given week: we offer share pickup on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Saturday only. We can not have shares ready on any other days.

  • You can skip a pickup and receive a double the following week.

  • If you miss your pickup, we will hold your share for 24 hours after your pickup day, and then it will be donated to a local food pantry. With more members than ever before, we don't have the cooler space to hold onto shares longer than this. This is a great option if you miss your pickup - just come the next day.

  • You can always send a guest to pick up in your place by simply notifying us of their name.

  • Please send us an email to laurelglenfarm@gmail.com 48 hours before an anticipated change. You must submit your request in writing in order to leave a paper trail. This allows you to show proof to our store staff at pickup in the event that we need clarification.

  • If a share is picked up outside of your scheduled time (aside from an approved change) or the 24 hour holding period without proof of a request, you will be billed for an additional share.
