Kale, spinach, romaine, and more!

STORIES & UPDATES

In spite of the heat, it was a pretty productive week!

The crew planted tomatoes, peppers, tomatillos, eggplant, and lettuce. We always expect to have a bit of loss due to transplant shock, which means within a few days we go back out with more transplants and replace what might be lost.

For example, if the tomatillo plant isn't tall enough to reach the trellis, it might fall over onto the black plastic mulch. On really hot days like we had this past week, it'll fry the plant beyond repair. Another reason we might lose a seedling is to a weak root system.

Here are Eric and Jona working on tomatillo replacement:

In 2022, we started staking our peppers. In August of 2021, we had a sudden, unexpected hurricane warning and a lot of them fell over in the rain and strong wind. We decided that this extra insurance was worth the trouble, even though the plants don't typically get that tall. That's one task on our list for this week. The tomatoes and tomatillos are already done.

We also planted watermelon, cantaloupe, and the first round of cucumbers, squash, and zucchini in the field. We're hoping for our first summer squash harvest about a month from now.

This week, large share members are receiving basil. A necessary step in growing basil is to "pinch," or remove, the tops of the plants so that it'll start to branch out and make more leaves. Our necessary step is your gain!

Share a photo in our Facebook group and let us know how you'll be using this classic crop.

This week, we're also excited to offer some new items: romaine, kale, and spinach for everyone, and Napa cabbage for large share members.

Here are two photos of the brassica blocks: one at our Booth Hill Road location and one at the Waverly Road location.

They contain kale, collards, broccoli, bok choy, green cabbage, Napa cabbage, and kohlrabi for us to harvest into June. Our Main Season program members join us in 2 weeks, so we're anticipating being able to use some of these crops for that week's box.

And one more exciting crop update: here's a look at the strawberries! We're just a few weeks away from harvesting one of our favorite fruits...

Wishing you all a nice, relaxing and reflective Memorial Day weekend.

VEGETABLE SUBSCRIPTION PICKUP POLICIES

  • All pickups must take place within store operating hours. For many reasons, we can't leave shares outside the store. Pickup days are Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays.

  • If you need to skip your share for the week, or change your pickup day, you must provide us with 48 hours' notice for any of the options below. This is because we pack shares the day before pickup. Once your share has been harvested and packed, we can not change or cancel your pickup.

    • For Tuesday pickups being changed, we need to know by Sunday.

    • Wednesday pickups, we need to know by Monday.

    • Saturday pickups, we need to know by Thursday.

  • You have the option to choose another pickup day in a given week: we offer share pickup on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Saturday only.

  • You can skip a pickup and receive a double the following week.

  • If you miss your pickup, we will hold your share for 24 hours after your pickup day, and then it will be donated to a local food pantry. This is a great option if you accidentally miss your pickup - just come the next day.

  • You can always send a guest to pick up in your place by simply notifying us of their name.

  • Please send us an email to laurelglenfarm@gmail.com 48 hours before your anticipated pickup in order to make a change. You must submit your request in writing in order to leave a paper trail. This allows you to show proof to our store staff at pickup in the event that we need clarification.

  • If a share is picked up outside of your scheduled time (aside from an approved change) or the 24 hour holding period, you will be billed for an additional share.
