Next year's garlic is planted

STORIES & UPDATES
This week was garlic planting week!
We tucked 110 lbs. of cloves into the ground for next year, using cloves from this year's garlic crop. This is the beauty of saving your own seed. It does detract from our own garlic sales, but it doesn't cost as much as seed garlic would. Next, Randy will use the tractor to dump leaves from a local landscaper, and the crew will spread them over the rows of garlic. This will insulate the garlic over the winter until we harvest it next July.
We do have some extra seed available if you'd like to plant some in your own garden. These $5 bags of cloves can be planted now. Cover them with a layer of leaves and pull them up next year. Easy peasy!

Our liquidation sale begins on Friday, November 28th. In a few days, we'll post the pricing of the items. We're only open until December 6th, and we are running low on some items:
Large sizes of honey
Delicata squash
Sweet potatoes
Oils and vinegars

Randy asked me this weekend, "Why are we closing so early this year?" While it is a few days sooner on the calendar than in some years, closing on the 13th would have been too late. The reason for this is that our pipes for washing veggies are above ground which means they're at risk of freezing. Most of the pipes need to have a space heater in the area at night. The furnace in our tractor/storage barn needs to be on in case it drops below 32 degrees. And it takes at least a week to clean up the store, storage areas, and of course, fields, before we truly shut down for the year. Having the final date be the 13th is more realistic than the 20th.
My response to Randy was that I also think it just feels so early because of how busy we are! Wholesale order fulfillment has specifically continued to keep us busy, as well as the CSA packing and store stocking. And there are still so many awesome veggies coming out of the field!

We still have cranberries from Killingworth Cranberries. They've advised us that the shelf life can be a couple of months, so they can certainly be used for baking and dehydrating into December.

All lettuce and escarole is still BOGO free through this Friday. Sorry, no mix and match.

This week, you're receiving turnips in your share. To review the difference between turnips and rutabaga...
Turnips are purple and white, and they're white on the inside when you peel them. They tend to be squatty and round in shape. The flavor is zesty like a radish.

In contrast, rutabaga is more orange-y and purple, and the shape is more oblong. Rutabaga is a pale orange on the inside, and its flavor is sweeter than a radish - not peppery.

Both are members of the cabbage family and have a cabbage flavor. It's worth noting that roasting turnips drastically caramelizes the flavor and makes it sweeter. Here are some cooking suggestions:

Vegetable Subscription Pickup Policies
All pickups must take place within store operating hours. For many reasons, we can't leave shares outside the store. Pickup days are Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays.
If you need to skip your share for the week, or change your pickup day, you must provide us with 48 hours' notice for any of the options below. This is because we pack shares the day before pickup. Once your share has been harvested and packed, we can not change or cancel your pickup.
For Tuesday pickups being changed, we need to know by Sunday.
Wednesday pickups, we need to know by Monday.
Saturday pickups, we need to know by Thursday.
You have the option to choose another pickup day in a given week: we offer share pickup on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Saturday only.
You can skip a pickup and receive a double the following week.
If you miss your pickup, we will hold your share for 24 hours after your pickup day, and then it will be donated to a local food pantry. With more members than ever before, we don't have the cooler space to hold onto shares longer than this. This is a great option if you accidentally miss your pickup - just come the next day.
You can always send a guest to pick up in your place by simply notifying us of their name.
Please send us an email to laurelglenfarm@gmail.com 48 hours before your anticipated pickup in order to make a change. You must submit your request in writing in order to leave a paper trail. This allows you to show proof to our store staff at pickup in the event that we need clarification.
If a share is picked up outside of your scheduled time (aside from an approved change) or the 24 hour holding period, you will be billed for an additional share.
