What an absolutely gorgeous week ahead!
I stepped out of the greenhouse this week and was struck by this beautiful view. We definitely feel extremely lucky to spend so much time on the farm.

However, I did get off the farm on Wednesday this week to go to a farm to school event in Bristol. I was invited by UConn Extension to network with food service directors from around the state. I made some promising connections to work with districts this summer and potentially beyond.
Families in Shelton will be happy to know that our leeks were served at Shelton High School this week!
This week, we're racing to harvest broccoli rabe and choy sum before they bolt. Though I will be happy with these hot temperatures ahead, these leafy greens won't be happy. They'll start to flower if we don't harvest them in time.
Therefore, this week's list of share contents comes with a disclaimer that we may need to make a substitution if we lose these crops.
We hope you aren't sick of greens yet, but they'll comprise most of the shares for the foreseeable future. The way I see it is I'm incredibly happy to have extra vitamins A, C, and K, folate, and antioxidants in my diet during this period of time.
This week, I threw chopped up escarole into a pot of Just a Crush with herbs and meatballs and served it with Durante's linguine. I try to make cooking greens as simple as possible so I don't have to reinvent the wheel with new recipes.

Overview: Also known as Chinese flowering cabbage, choy sum or choi sum is an Asian green that is a member of the cabbage family and relative of bok choy. Similar to broccoli rabe, you can eat the stalk, leaves, florets, and even the yellow flowers. The taste is similar to that of mustard, bok choy, broccoli rabe, and turnips. Varieties can be green or purple. Harvested in the spring and again in the fall.
Storage: Short-term: Store choy sum in a plastic bag in the crisper drawer of your fridge. Or, trim the ends and store it in a glass of water, like a bouquet. Wash when ready to use (within the week).
Long-term: Can be frozen after being blanched. See: How to Store Broccoli Rabe You Can Revive Wilted Lettuce and Veggies with This Simple Trick
Recipes:
We're so grateful for our hardworking crew! This week, the field crew planted tomatoes and tomatillos, plus pounded stakes and strung the trellises. It's a lot of physical labor to do that!
Each item is also harvested and washed by hand (each leaf of broccoli rabe and choy sum snipped and bunched!), sorted for its respective retail purpose, crated and tagged, and inspected before being sold.
It's about to get a whole lot busier soon, too!

VEGETABLE SUBSCRIPTION PICKUP POLICIES
All pickups must take place within store operating hours. For many reasons, we can't leave shares outside the store. Pickup days are Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays.
If you need to skip your share for the week, or change your pickup day, you must provide us with 48 hours' notice for any of the options below. This is because we pack shares the day before pickup. Once your share has been harvested and packed, we can not change or cancel your pickup.
For Tuesday pickups being changed, we need to know by Sunday.
Wednesday pickups, we need to know by Monday.
Saturday pickups, we need to know by Thursday.
You have the option to choose another pickup day in a given week: we offer share pickup on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Saturday only.
You can skip a pickup and receive a double the following week.
If you miss your pickup, we will hold your share for 24 hours after your pickup day, and then it will be donated to a local food pantry. This is a great option if you accidentally miss your pickup - just come the next day.
You can always send a guest to pick up in your place by simply notifying us of their name.
Please send us an email to laurelglenfarm@gmail.com 48 hours before your anticipated pickup in order to make a change. You must submit your request in writing in order to leave a paper trail. This allows you to show proof to our store staff at pickup in the event that we need clarification.
If a share is picked up outside of your scheduled time (aside from an approved change) or the 24 hour holding period, you will be billed for an additional share.
