Happy anniversary, Farmer Randy!

STORIES & UPDATES

This week, it was nice to see some old friends return. Like lettuce - such a coveted item!

Everyone's share will contain a head of lettuce.

Broccoli rabe is so much easier to grow in the fall for some reason. During the month of June, we seem to lose it overnight during a big temperature swing.

ree

The current temperature swings are affecting the romaine. The huge ups and downs are causing many of the heads to bolt: the process of ultimately making seeds. We'll try to harvest what we can of the heads, but many might be lost.

We plant our fall greens in succession to keep them coming. There's a younger batch of lettuce that will come in next month.

We also have a new batch of arugula coming in that you'll receive this week. That block contains radishes, Asian greens, and salad turnips as well.

At any given moment we have multiple plantings of summer squash, kale and collards, broccoli, cauliflower, cucumbers, and even tomatoes coming in. We balance harvesting them every few days. Over 20 acres, it's a lot of locations to check!

We're thrilled that our cucumber crop has been so strong this year. It's been a few years since we've had one we were happy with. The fall cukes are so healthy!

This week's free choice will include cucumbers as well as other summer favorites while we've still got them. At this point in the season, our tomato quality has dropped and the quantities aren't as abundant to put into every share. That could change depending on the weather, but this week we'll enjoy some cooler weather crops.

We love our sassy chickens! They've enjoyed chowing down on reject pumpkins, tomatoes, greens, and even cucumbers. Our compost pile is fed, but so are the girls.

Real Food CT also rescued over 400 lbs. of "seconds" tomatoes, peppers, and other odds and ends. They delivered them to the Thomas Merton Center and Sterling House. They are such wonderful people for spending a couple of hours here on Wednesday, sorting through crates and giving of their time!

During the week ahead, we're gearing up for CT Grown for CT Kids Week, which is celebrated during the first week of October every year. This year, our produce will be served in Shelton, Milford, and even Cheshire schools! We hope to share some photos with you next week.

Randy and I are celebrating our 11th wedding anniversary this weekend. We're grateful to work together every day, to share such a meaningful life, and to be your farmers!

Vegetable Subscription Pickup Policies

  • All pickups must take place within store operating hours. For many reasons, we can't leave shares outside the store. Pickup days are Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays.

  • If you need to skip your share for the week, or change your pickup day, you must provide us with 48 hours' notice for any of the options below. This is because we pack shares the day before pickup. Once your share has been harvested and packed, we can not change or cancel your pickup.

  • For Tuesday pickups being changed, we need to know by Sunday.

  • Wednesday pickups, we need to know by Monday.

  • Saturday pickups, we need to know by Thursday.

  • You have the option to choose another pickup day in a given week: we offer share pickup on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Saturday only.

  • You can skip a pickup and receive a double the following week.

  • If you miss your pickup, we will hold your share for 24 hours after your pickup day, and then it will be donated to a local food pantry. With more members than ever before, we don't have the cooler space to hold onto shares longer than this. This is a great option if you accidentally miss your pickup - just come the next day.

  • You can always send a guest to pick up in your place by simply notifying us of their name.

  • Please send us an email to laurelglenfarm@gmail.com 48 hours before your anticipated pickup in order to make a change. You must submit your request in writing in order to leave a paper trail. This allows you to show proof to our store staff at pickup in the event that we need clarification.

  • If a share is picked up outside of your scheduled time (aside from an approved change) or the 24 hour holding period, you will be billed for an additional share.
