Let's do a garlic scape cooking challenge!

STORIES & UPDATES

It's garlic scape week!

Garlic scapes are harvested from the top of the garlic plant. Farmers cut off the scape, which holds the seed pod. This is so that the plant can transfer energy back down to creating a bigger bulb rather than producing a seed pod.

Garlic scapes have a mild garlic flavor and can be prepared as their own vegetable, like beans or asparagus, or chopped up and used to enhance dishes as you would use a regular clove of garlic. Scapes are harvested once in June, before the garlic is harvested later in July.

I get SO excited for their arrival! My favorite ways to enjoy them:

  • Grilled whole

  • Stir fried

  • Chopped up and used as garlic

  • Made into pesto

  • Chopped up and mixed in with butter (serve over fish or use to make garlic bread!) or cream cheese

This week, we're going to do a little contest in our members' Facebook group! Post a photo of what you made with your garlic scapes by Friday, June 26th. Let's share inspiration together and show how creatively we cook! Our team will pick one lucky member from each pickup day to win a jar of Sunday Sauce.

June marks the arrival of lots of beloved crops, which will begin to trickle in soon: snap peas, broccoli, cucumbers, kohlrabi, and summer squash. However, June is still primarily greens season in Connecticut, until the long-lasting heat pushes them out.

Therefore, your share will continue to contain a variety of greens until we officially say goodbye to spring.

The free choice table will reflect that, too. We hope you enjoy being able to select a veggie to round out your share. Oftentimes, this will be a veggie that you've seen before in your share, which we're still harvesting. Instead of receiving duplicate items from one week to the next, this allows you to choose a favorite. In some cases, it may be an extra of something you're receiving in your share that week. For example, this week's base share includes a head of escarole, but you may want a second head to make a large batch.

Here are a few more snapshots from the week:

Hakurei salad turnips: one of my FAVORITE raw vegetables. A sweet, juicy, delicious version of a radish. Large share members are receiving these this week. Saute them, pickle them, roast them, eat them raw.

We welcomed Audrey and Alex (pictured), as well as Thomas, back to the team this week. We are SO lucky to have them!

We spent a ton of time harvesting strawberries this week. They ripened incredibly quickly this year and it was hard to stay on top of them. We had hoped to trial some pick-your-own this season, but didn't feel we had a good handle on the timeline of the ripening or quantities. We'll still have a ton in the store, though!

In spite of the heat, our crew did an incredible job as always. Everything in your share is harvested by hand, inspected, washed, and crated. Believe me when I say, they have plenty of reason to complain about the weather and the tedium, but never do!

On tap for this week:

  • Thinning peaches from trees. This will allow the tree to concentrate its energy into growing nice big, juicy peaches for harvest later this summer

  • Planting more winter squash seeds

  • Hand weeding

  • And more...

School is out, too! We're excited to have one of our little helpers back on the farm. Congratulations students and teachers on completing another year!

VEGETABLE SUBSCRIPTION POLICIES

  • All pickups must take place within store operating hours. For many reasons, we can't leave shares outside the store.

  • If you need to skip your share for the week, or change your pickup day, you must provide us with 48 hours' notice for any of the options below. This is because we pack shares the day before pickup. Once your share has been harvested and packed, we can not change or cancel your pickup.

    • For Tuesday pickups being changed, we need to know by Sunday.

    • Wednesday pickups, we need to know by Monday.

    • Saturday pickups, we need to know by Thursday.

  • You have the option to choose another pickup day in a given week: we offer share pickup on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Saturday only. We can not have shares ready on other days.

  • You can skip a pickup and receive a double the following week.

  • If you miss your pickup, we will hold your share for 24 hours after your pickup day, and then it will be donated to a local food pantry. This is a great option if you miss your pickup - just come the next day.

  • You can always send a guest to pick up in your place by simply notifying us of their name.

  • Please send us an email to laurelglenfarm@gmail.com 48 hours before your anticipated pickup in order to make a change. You must submit your request in writing in order to leave a paper trail. This allows you to show proof to our store staff at pickup in the event that we need clarification.

  • If a share is picked up outside of your scheduled time, (aside from an approved change) or the 24 hour holding period, you will be billed for an additional share.
