More pick-your-own this week

STORIES & UPDATES

Have you seen our new sign on Booth Hill Road? Thanks to the Connecticut Department of Agriculture, we were awarded a grant to help get The Fields off the ground. Part of that award included a beautiful new sign, designed by Randy's cousin Amanda.

If you'd like to join us for pick-your-own this week, details are as follows:

  • Tuesday, July 15th - 3 to 5 p.m. Raspberries and flowers. Gates open at 3:00 sharp, entries are accepted until 5:00, and the gates close at 5:30.

  • Saturday, July 19th from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Raspberries and flowers. (Gates open at 10:00 sharp, entries are accepted until 12:00, and the gates close at 12:30.)

Please note: If we have a large crowd, the fields may be closed sooner.

The address for this is 475 Booth Hill Road in Shelton (not Trumbull! Check your GPS!). We recommend wearing sturdy walking shoes (and of course photo-worthy attire!)

Feel free to bring a water bottle, however please note that there is no restroom at this property yet - we have a restroom at our home farm property 3 minutes away at 247 Waverly Road and you're welcome to use it at any time before or during the event time frame.

Raspberries are $6.50 per half pint.

Flowers are $25 +tax. Bouquets must be able to be grasped in one hand.

Please pre-pay at the welcome station - we'll then direct you to walk to our harvesting areas and show you how to complete the harvesting.

See you there!

We're loving seeing your posts in our Facebook group! The innovation and the inspiration are the very essence of what this program is all about.

If you haven't cooked up last week's collards, let's see what you're making!

This week, you're receiving Swiss chard in your share. We love to include one type of green in the share whenever possible. As we get deeper into the summer months, salad options become much more limited. Swiss chard is a nice light green that can be cooked or enjoyed raw, like spinach. Cooking it makes it milder and sweeter. You can even quick pickle the stems for a crunchy snack!

Cucumbers are rolling in a little more steadily now. Did you know we plant 9 crops of squash, zucchini, and cucumbers in succession so that they continue to yield through the first frost? This week, we're seeding round number six.

Above is a view of the eggplant with the fruit fields in the background. Beautiful, right?! The first of the eggplant has arrived!

This week, we also needed to harvest the remaining cabbages in the field, so you'll see them in your share again (a little smaller this time). We wanted to give them to you right away as the nutrition values go down the longer produce sits in storage, however, if you're not interested in eating it right away it will last for another few weeks in your fridge with no problem.

This week, the crew took on the very tedious task of putting bird netting on our red and green table grapes. In years past, we didn't invest in the netting and the grapes were picked off the second they ripened.

We started by clipping the sides together with clothespins, but the pins would slip off and the bird netting would pop off the top. So, we switched to binder clips and that seemed to work out much better.

Admittedly, it was frustrating, but I must note that no one on staff ever outwardly complains about the hard work they do.

They're looking gorgeous and might be ready within the month!

Vegetable Subscription Pickup Policies

  • All pickups must take place within store operating hours. For many reasons, we can't leave shares outside the store. Pickup days are Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays.

  • If you need to skip your share for the week, or change your pickup day, you must provide us with 48 hours' notice for any of the options below. This is because we pack shares the day before pickup. Once your share has been harvested and packed, we can not change or cancel your pickup.

  • For Tuesday pickups being changed, we need to know by Sunday.

  • Wednesday pickups, we need to know by Monday.

  • Saturday pickups, we need to know by Thursday.

  • You have the option to choose another pickup day in a given week: we offer share pickup on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Saturday only.

  • You can skip a pickup and receive a double the following week.

  • If you miss your pickup, we will hold your share for 24 hours after your pickup day, and then it will be donated to a local food pantry. With more members than ever before, we don't have the cooler space to hold onto shares longer than this. This is a great option if you accidentally miss your pickup - just come the next day.

  • You can always send a guest to pick up in your place by simply notifying us of their name. Please send us an email to laurelglenfarm@gmail.com 48 hours before your anticipated pickup in order to make a change. A paper trail is always best!
