STORIES & UPDATES
With the 4th of July on the horizon and the temperatures we had this week, it finally feels like summer is here. The crops are starting to get the memo. We've got exciting things happening now.
This week, you're receiving cabbage in your share. With barbeques ahead, it's the perfect week to make slaw. The cabbage may be red or green, but can be used in similar ways. Interestingly, the nutrition content of red vs. green cabbage differs slightly.

At the risk of sounding completely strange, has anyone else ever had a Slaw Dog? It's a hot dog topped with coleslaw, pickles, mustard, and in the south, they put chili on it too. Here's a recipe close to the way I love it. Don't knock it 'til you try it!
And, honestly, seeing all of your unique and special creations in our Facebook group truly completes this program. Keep 'em coming!

Don't forget to enter our Asian greens mix cooking challenge. One winner will be chosen at random to win a prize! Post a photo of how you prepared the mix and we'll pick one winner by Wednesday, July 2nd. All you have to do is caption it with what it is - no recipe sharing required. Good luck!
We may tentatively open The Fields at 475 Booth Hill Road in Shelton for pick-your-own raspberries next Saturday morning.

Please follow us on Instagram and check your email inboxes to find out for sure. We're watching those berries! @thefieldsatlgf
Does anyone have any old wicker baskets kicking around that they're no longer using? We're always looking to reduce our carbon footprint and repurpose materials.

We'd love to accept donations of wicker baskets to help us get The Fields off the ground.
We intend to use them to allow guests to carry their freshly picked containers of berries down the hill.
Simply bring them to the store if you'd like to rehome them this week. Thank you so much! We are so excited to see what a unique collection we inherit!
It's time for the first Stuff-a-Bag of the season!

Tuesday, July 1st
Wednesday, July 2nd

Come to the store during open hours. Pre-pay $30 for one of our bags. Head outside and fill your bag from the offerings set up farmers' market style.
Including: lettuce, escarole, romaine, napa cabbage, garlic scapes, kohlrabi, summer squash, and more!
All current CSA members receive an additional $5 discount on their bag!
I'll end the newsletter this week by saying: we had ourselves a week here at the farm. Without rehashing the mess we endured, I'll say the heat really messed things up. Some crops bolted due to the heat, like this broccoli.

On Wednesday, Randy's Farmall tractor wouldn't start when he went to fertilize, leaving him stranded multiple times. This happened because in old vehicles, the fuel starts to boil and overheat.
Meanwhile, I was giving a tour to a food service director and forgot to water the greenhouse. When I finally remembered at 1:30, much of the celery, sunflowers, and most of the Brussels sprouts were completely fried. We aren't sure yet about the extent of the damage. Will we have Brussels sprouts this year????
The winter squash seed has also been eaten by critters, so we're racing the clock on getting them to come up. Thanks to Jamie Jones for providing us with extra seed, we were able to get them in the ground. However, the problem happened again. On Saturday, our crew covered the crops with pieces of Reemay cloth to hopefully create a barrier going forward.
While we were busy doing that, we could have been doing something else. It's a vicious cycle. Did my brain slip up again and forget to water? Are there raspberries ready to pick that we're neglecting right now? It's hard to deal with so many problems, but problems are part of life, right? Thank you all for being here.
Sending you virtual flowers. We expect to start Build-a-Bouquet next weekend!

Vegetable Subscription Pickup Policies
All pickups must take place within store operating hours. For many reasons, we can't leave shares outside the store. Pickup days are Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays.
If you need to skip your share for the week, or change your pickup day, you must provide us with 48 hours' notice for any of the options below. This is because we pack shares the day before pickup. Once your share has been harvested and packed, we can not change or cancel your pickup.
For Tuesday pickups being changed, we need to know by Sunday.
Wednesday pickups, we need to know by Monday.
Saturday pickups, we need to know by Thursday.
You have the option to choose another pickup day in a given week: we offer share pickup on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Saturday only.
You can skip a pickup and receive a double the following week.
If you miss your pickup, we will hold your share for 24 hours after your pickup day, and then it will be donated to a local food pantry. With more members than ever before, we don't have the cooler space to hold onto shares longer than this. This is a great option if you accidentally miss your pickup - just come the next day.
You can always send a guest to pick up in your place by simply notifying us of their name. Please send us an email to laurelglenfarm@gmail.com 48 hours before your anticipated pickup in order to make a change. A paper trail is always best!
