What's a plumber's favorite vegetable?

STORIES & UPDATES

A leek! Ha ha ha.

Well, I'm sorry to say, even though Randy says "leeks are my favorite allium" (onion family crop), leeks are not mine.

This is because leek planting is one of my least favorite tasks of the entire season. It's slow, tedious, and overwhelming.

It all starts with a tray like this.

This tray has 512 cells, sometimes more than one leek per cell, and there are 18 trays to plant this year.

Each plant has to be gently pulled out of the tray so the roots don't break, carefully tucked into the ground so it's still standing upright, and spaced 6" apart. It's not as easy to move quickly as it is with something like peppers, which are spaced a foot apart and less brittle for pulling out of the tray.

This year, we're planting 4 raised beds of leeks, and with 5 rows across, it's 20 in all. It takes about an hour to an hour and a half per person to plant a row, meaning that the project is incredibly time-consuming. I always joke that I'm going to call in sick on leek planting day.

These leeks take about 5 months to grow from here. We plant 3 different kinds of leeks, some of which will be overwintered for next spring. It's a blessing to have something other than greens in the spring, which is why we're glad to put in the effort now for a payoff later.

You may have noticed that the leeks are planted on silver plastic. This is a tool to help us distract and confuse insects because of the way it disperses light. Cool, right?!

Some exciting news is that we're beginning to harvest some fruit! Honeyberries are ripening, and we hope strawberries will be right behind them.

Honeyberries are a little known crop. Our honeyberry plants came from Canada and had to pass through customs before we were able to plant them here as part of our new fruit field in 2021. Honeyberries are a "super fruit" because they are packed with more antioxidants and vitamins than blueberries. They taste like a tart blueberry - think grapefruit!

A quick check on the strawberries showed that they're beginning to ripen. Since this is our first time growing them, we have no idea what to expect. The plants look extremely healthy, but how will it pan out? When we (hopefully) have enough strawberries to sell, we'll send out an email - so keep your eyes peeled on your inbox!

Members, this week you're receiving fresh oregano.

Here are some ideas:

We keep saying it, but it bears repeating - it really has been the hardest spring we can remember. Chatting with our farmer friends this week, we learned that this has been the rainiest May on record since the 1940s! Here I am, planting peppers in the mud.

But, as they say, "The best things in life are worth waiting for."

The beautiful jewel-toned colors of the brassicas remind us of all there is to come in June - napa cabbage, kale, kohlrabi, broccoli, and so much more...

How to Change Your Vegetable Subscription Pickup Day

  • If you need to skip your share for the week, or change your pickup day, you must provide us with 48 hours' notice for any of the options below. This is because we pack shares the day before pickup. Once your share has been harvested and packed, we can not cancel your pickup.

  • For Tuesday pickups being changed, we need to know by Sunday.

  • Wednesday pickups, we need to know by Monday.

  • Saturday pickups, we need to know by Thursday.

  • You have the option to choose another of those pickup days in a given week: Tuesday, Wednesday, or Saturday.

  • You can skip a pickup and receive a double the following week.

  • If you miss your pickup, we will hold your share for 24 hours after your pickup day, and then it will be donated to a local food pantry. With more members than ever before, we don't have the cooler space to hold onto shares longer than this. This is a great option if you accidentally miss your pickup - just come the next day.

  • You can always send a guest to pick up in your place by simply notifying us of their name.

  • Please send us an email to laurelglenfarm@gmail.com 48 hours before your anticipated pickup in order to make a change. A paper trail is always best!
