Join me on my virtual field walk of snapshots

STORIES & UPDATES

Last week we were excited to be able to offer a few new items in shares, and this week we'll have a couple of new offerings as well.

Our first brassica planting is maturing, as you saw with last week's kale. This week, we're harvesting collard greens. We have a ton of recipe suggestions for enjoying them, and you certainly don't have to cook them all day.

Recipes:

Large share members are receiving the first of the Swiss chard as well. Bok choy is back for everyone. Spinach continues. And scallions and basil will both be available for free choice selection this week.

On Friday or Saturday, I always conduct a field walk to see what will go into shares the following week. This time, it was super important to take note of what will be available next week, as 215 more members will join in to the program. As you know, June is still pretty greens heavy, but we should also expect to see the first broccoli, peas, garlic scapes, and by the end of the month, squash, zucchini, and cucumbers.

Here are a few snapshots from my walk.

Alongside the main greenhouse: seeded cantaloupe on the black plastic rows, garlic beyond that, lettuce, and trellised up: snap peas.

Looking up from the second round of greens blocks: radishes, salad turnips, arugula, spinach, and fruit trees in the distance.

Looking across the pepper plants to see a field that we expanded over the winter. It was cut off diagonally at the bottom, which made it difficult to grow even rows of crops. Last year, we had green beans there and the rows were awkward lengths. Our excavator smoothed it out, the fence line was moved back, and we're ready to plant broccoli and cauliflower in the fall.

I did a check of strawberries, and they're starting to turn! Exciting progress!

I want to highlight the hardworking crew again. This week, they planted sweet potatoes, celeriac, and some of the fall leeks. They also hand weeded most of the beets block. Leek planting and hand weeding are two of the most tedious tasks on the farm. Each leek is planted individually, and each weed is pulled individually.

No one ever complains, or makes a face, despite being asked to do unpleasant things in all kinds of weather conditions. I don't know how we got so lucky with these incredibly positive, hardworking people, but we did.

Finally, you'll be the first to hear about a little reward we're doing this week to thank anyone who shops in the store during these less popular times of year.

Monday, June 1st through Sunday, June 7th - make a purchase and earn a ticket, valid for use on a future purchase made through June 2026.

VEGETABLE SUBSCRIPTION PICKUP POLICIES

  • All pickups must take place within store operating hours. For many reasons, we can't leave shares outside the store. Pickup days are Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays.

  • If you need to skip your share for the week, or change your pickup day, you must provide us with 48 hours' notice for any of the options below. This is because we pack shares the day before pickup. Once your share has been harvested and packed, we can not change or cancel your pickup.

    • For Tuesday pickups being changed, we need to know by Sunday.

    • Wednesday pickups, we need to know by Monday.

    • Saturday pickups, we need to know by Thursday.

  • You have the option to choose another pickup day in a given week: we offer share pickup on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Saturday only.

  • You can skip a pickup and receive a double the following week.

  • If you miss your pickup, we will hold your share for 24 hours after your pickup day, and then it will be donated to a local food pantry. This is a great option if you accidentally miss your pickup - just come the next day.

  • You can always send a guest to pick up in your place by simply notifying us of their name.

  • Please send us an email to laurelglenfarm@gmail.com 48 hours before your anticipated pickup in order to make a change. You must submit your request in writing in order to leave a paper trail. This allows you to show proof to our store staff at pickup in the event that we need clarification.

  • If a share is picked up outside of your scheduled time (aside from an approved change) or the 24 hour holding period, you will be billed for an additional share.
